13. Doorknob (Collab Attempt 2)

Amanda and I did a second attempt that required a home-depot integration - a door knob replacement kit. 

The Problem: Door knobs catching on clothes/bags and pushing when you need to pull.

Print Prep: Sliced so there is no need to use support material. I used the thread tool, super easy. I was excited to see this work.

Prototype: Ran out of filament, Byran saved us with a re-print. Thank you! The push knob assembled.

 A happy discovery ^. the pull design can just be flipped to act as a pul only or push only knob. 

 I like this so much better, now the knob is modular and cohesive!

 The assembly is meant to be screwed into the door knob kit. This needs to be refined so I'll finish this and update the blog by next week. I'm really excited about this solution, I just have to figure out how to integrate the home depot kit more appropriately.

Islamic Parametric Patterns Mannnnnn this 12 Noon Thursday deadline always catches me off guard! I want to take this project further before class on Friday, so stay tuned.  For now, I'll present what I managed to complete so far using the Parametric design from my previous blog: (Scroll to the bottom to see Part 2 - attempting the drawing again) As you can see, I printed all 3 iterations on one long piece of mylar with a gold pen (the type that writes when pushed down). I wanted to make something that couldn't be done with a traditional printer and  I thought the gold and mylar would be a fun experiment - I think it makes the final piece feel valuable and ephemeral.  The mylar was a bit thin and did warp a bit, there's also a roller impression mark on the one side... but it worked!  The clip above shows each design in a bit more detail. 4.Parametric 3D Surface Design: Progress In Progress

I've been playing around with tutorials online and seeing if I can deconstruct some definitions in order to understand how they work.  I first looked into Islamic patterns that evolve: I fixed the code to get it to work, but I didn't really figure out how to re-do this on my own. Very confusing. Then I looked into this Twirl design  with no luck: Lastly, I tried to make a wave pattern with a tutorial. no dice again. I got confused about halfway through and realized I'm way over my head.  I want to try  this one  next, but for now I just made a random surface the way I know how.  The squares are most interesting to me, but it would be great to add some organic flow or morph into this design. I think I have a lot left to do in order to get to something that is exciting. 5. Parametric Surface Design: Progress Part 2

I made 2 versions of the tile that I'm happy with: Version 1: Glitchy Palm Leafs based off the progress from last blog post Version 2: Smooth Interlocks The building process: used pipe first, it didn't work. Then I remembered sweep! It worked but it was broken (red), I think its because one ring didn't show up at this radius. So I cheated a little and copied one into place in rhino after it was baked. Made sure it fit in the bounding box more clean up in rhino, deleting extra bits and booleaning this thing into existence. Doing unions in grasshopper kept causing crashes so I did it after the bake.  It fits in the bounding box! Grasshopper Code: Tile:
